Shops declare themselves bag free!

Shops are now displaying signs, indicating that they are plastic bag free, and the co-op will shortly stop giving out free plastic bags. Please support the Bring Your Bag group at the May day fair. We'll once again be selling Copmanthorpe bags, and raising awareness of the problems plastic bags can cause. We're also celebrating the success of the campaign! So make sure that you Bring Your Bag to the May day fair.

Residents agree to bin the bag!

The results of our first web poll clearly demonstrate that Copmanthorpe residents are ready to Bin the Plastic Bag. Over 75% of respondents agreed that they would use a shop, even if it didn't give them a free plastic bag. Our new poll asks if residents are now using recyclable or reusable bags - looking around the village, it certainly seems so! Well done Copmanthorpe!

over 60% of village retailers bin the bag!

There has been less public activity over the last few months, but members of the bring your bag team have been working away, pursuading the village retailers to go plastic bag free.  At the beginning of the project, we set a target of 60% retailers to go plastic bag free, and it looks like we've done it!  Nine of the 15 village retailers have agreed to bin the bag.  They are: the chemist; the chip shop; the village post office; Paul Band's newsagent; The annex cafe; both hairdressers; the library; and pizza time.  Thank you to these shops!! You'll soon see the sunflower logo appearing in the shops, reminding you to bring your bag.

back to bags

We've taken a break from the Bring Your Bag campaign over the summer, but now we're back in action.  Bags are available to buy throughout the village, both the chemists and the newsagents have them for sale.  The Bring Your Bag message is spreading.  Over the summer Tesco's have taken bags off the tills.  Reports from our local shops tell us that people are simply not asking for bags any more.

Rain fails to dampen BYB’s spirit at the 2008 Copmanthorpe Carnival

Copmanthorpe’s annual rain festival, otherwise known as the summer Carnival, provided an opportunity for the residents of Copmanthorpe to learn more about the Bring Your Bag campaign. Despite the heavy showers, there was a great deal of interest. We had lots of competition entries, children enjoyed decorating plain reusable bags and plenty of “Copmanthorpe bags” were sold. Also, thank you to the Co-op stall for supporting the message by giving away their cotton fairtrade bags.

School Eco-Market

The “Bring Your Bag” group was present at the school Eco-market in June. By bringing the issue into the public eye, providing information and involving the whole community with children’s activities and competitions, we aim to make bringing your own bag the only way to shop!
